McAdoo faithful make annual pilgrimage in ancestors footsteps
SHENANDOAH – In the late 1800’s, the Ukrainian Catholic faithful of McAdoo had one option to attend church services: walk 16 miles to Shenandoah.
Before St. Mary’s in McAdoo was established, the nearest Ukrainian Catholic church was St. Michael’s here in town. St. Michael’s was the first of its kind in the United States.
Parishioners gathered this year at St. Michael’s around 10am for a blessing and made the trek to McAdoo via Mahanoy City, Delano, and Lofty.
The walk, organizers said, is to raise awareness for relief efforts and fundraising related to the war in Ukraine.
Donations raised go to support humanitarian aid projects and organizations, as well as suffering Church institutions in Ukraine.
A link to their donation page can be found on the St. Mary’s Facebook page.
