Man suspected of DUI in fatal Lansford crash

LANSFORD – State troopers suspect a Summit Hill man was driving under the influence when he ran off the highway near here, struck a tree and rolled the car, injuring his passenger. The passenger later died at the hospital.

State Police at Lehighton said the crash happened around 2am Saturday on Route 209 near Andrewsville Road.

Troopers said James Carroll III, 47, of Summit Hill, was headed north on Route 209 away from town in a 2009 Nissan Maxima.

The car left the roadway, struck a tree, then a guiderail before rolling.

Both Carroll and his passenger, who police did not name but said was a 48-year-old Jim Thorpe man, had to be rescued from the car by firefighters.

Carroll was seriously injured and not wearing a seatbelt. His passenger was wearing a seatbelt.

Both were taken to local hospitals.

The passenger, troopers said, died an hour after the crash from his injuries.

Route 209 was closed for six hours as state troopers investigated.

Firefighters from Lansford responded along with Lehighton EMS and Summit Hill Police.

Troopers said Carroll was suspected of driving under the influence.

Charges have not been filed in connection with the crash, as of Sunday afternoon.
