Man accused of fleeing police now facing felony theft charges
SHENANDOAH – A Shenandoah man accused of fleeing police twice last month is now facing felony theft charges in connection with the car he used in one of the pursuits.
Derek Yashinsky, 33, of 138 South White Street, is now facing felony theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property charges, filed by Shenandoah Police. He was previously charged by Shenandoah Police with misdemeanor flight to avoid apprehension, obstruction of justice, possession of offensive weapons, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was also charged by West Mahanoy Township Police with felony fleeing or eluding police, misdemeanor flight to avoid apprehension, summary scattering rubbish, and traffic infractions.
In the latest criminal complaint, filed by Shenandoah Police Captain Cody Applegate, police said they were called to a home on North Market Street for a reported vehicle theft around 3:45pm on Feb. 16.
The victim told police that she went for a walk and noticed her vehicle was not where she parked it, along the unit block of East Lloyd Street.
The night before, Yashinsky and his girlfriend had stopped by her home and asked the victim for money. At that point, the victim told police she believed Yashinsky swiped the keys to the vehicle and left with it, without her realizing.
That same night, police saw Yashinsky driving the vehicle and tried to stop him, leading to a pursuit, ending with the abandonment of the vehicle on Herald Road.
Yashinsky was arraigned on the new theft charges and committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post $10,000 cash bail.
A preliminary hearing is set for March 21 before Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker in Shenandoah.
