Mahanoy Township mulls adding Industrial zoning atop Broad Mountain

MAHANOY CITY – Mahanoy Township is holding a hearing to consider a major amendment to the zoning map, opening a lot more land on the Broad Mountain to industrial development.

The hearing is set for Monday, Feb. 6 at 6pm at the Mahanoy Township building at 1010 West Centre Street.

Supervisors will hear public comments on proposed zoning map amendments in the township.

Maps provided to the Sentinel show much of the changes are focused atop Broad Mountain, rezoning a large portion of the Conservation Residential and Conservation Mining districts surrounding New Boston, Morea, Vulcan, and southwest of Buck Mountain as Industrial.

An outlying portion of the core Single Family Residential district in New Boston would also be rezoned as Industrial.

Retained Conservation Residential areas would be on either side of Roosevelt Drive between New Boston and Morea, and south of the Morea Road, as well as the cemeteries and Skytop Coal property at the Morea Road and Burma Road.

Also rezoned as Industrial is a tract of land behind the Sunoco station on the Vulcan Hill, south of Buck Mountain Road and nearly back to the village itself.

This plan comes as Ryan Township is also considering rezoning the Mountain Valley Golf Course, on the south side of Interstate 81 and abutting Mahanoy Township’s changes, to Industrial.
