Mahanoy streetscape project gets $415k state grant
MAHANOY CITY – Planned improvements along Main Street here received a sizable financial boost from the state.
Rep. Dane Watro (R-Luzerne/Schuylkill) and Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) announced the $415,000 grant Tuesday, awarded to Mahanoy City for streetscape improvements along Main Street between Market and Spruce.
The grants were approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) through the Multimodal Transportation Fund, which provides funding to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to Pennsylvania residents.
The CFA was established as an independent agency of the Commonwealth and holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments in Pennsylvania’s economic growth.
Mahanoy City Borough Manager John Fatula was not available Tuesday to discuss the specifics of the improvements.
Hazleton also received $300,000 for improvements along Alter Street between 2nd and 6th streets. Those funds will be used for pavement restoration and upgrades to the sidewalks, curbing and ADA-accesible ramps. New storm water grates, trees and decorative lighting will also be added to create visual support for the local businesses.
“These grants are for ongoing projects designed to enhance the streetscapes in both municipalities, which is critical to attracting new development and jobs,” said Watro. “I gladly joined Sen. Argall in wholeheartedly supporting both projects and advocating for the funding that’s needed to make the improvements.”
“So many people in both Hazleton and Mahanoy City are working to breathe new life into the communities they call home,” said Argall. “Thanks to these highly competitive state grants, their efforts have now received another boost. Both areas will see refurbished downtown sidewalks, new benches and trees, and other improvements.”
