Mahanoy seeks demolition bids for 14 blighted homes, emergency demo approved for two

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Two homes at Grant and Spruce Streets in Mahanoy City set for demolition on May 14, 2020.

MAHANOY CITY – Two collapsing buildings are coming down soon in this borough, and 14 more may follow, pending funding.

At their monthly meeting on Tuesday, Mahanoy City Borough Council approved the emergency demolition of two homes at 104 South Grant and 224 West Spruce Streets in the borough.

“104 South Grant has collapsed, and it’s taking the exterior wall of 224 West Spruce with it also, and the foundation, so it’s not stable at this point,” said Bill Killian, code enforcement officers. “Both property owners have been presented with notices of violations and citations were filed on both with no responses.”

The buildings are owned by Helen and Francis Kufrovich, Florida, and Marie Dorestant, New York, respectively.

Mr. Z’s Contracting, Shenandoah, was on site Thursday preparing to demolish the two properties. Neighbors say the home on Grant has been vacant for decades.

The buildings suffered partial collapses in the rear of the property, posing a risk of neighboring occupied homes.

Borough Council also sent 14 other dilapidated homes in the borough out for bids for demolition.

“It’s cheaper to advertise them all at one time,” said Council President Thomas McCabe, noting that all 14 may not be demolished.

The homes are:

  • 425 West Spruce
  • 503 West Mahanoy
  • 125 and 127 East Mahanoy
  • 13 and 15 East Mahanoy
  • 800 East Centre
  • 1013 East Pine
  • 505 and 507 East Centre
  • 128 West Market
  • 728 East Market
  • 14 and 16 South “B”
