Mahanoy man arrested for firing shots in borough
MAHANOY CITY – A Mahanoy City man is in Schuylkill County Prison, accused of firing errant rounds from a handgun in the borough.
Thomas J. Hall, Jr., 23, of Mahanoy City, is facing reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct charges, accused of firing a handgun multiple times on East Railroad Street.
According to the criminal complaint filed by Patrolman Jordan Smith, police were called to the 500 block of East Railroad Street around 7:30pm Wednesday, March 22 for a report of a man brandishing a handgun.
Police said the caller provided video footage of the man walking by, pulling a handgun from a green fanny pack. He appeared to rack the handgun and point it in front of him.
The caller said he’d heard a gunshot earlier in the day.
That man was identified as Hall, and police were unable to locate him that day.
On Friday, March 24, police received multiple complaints of shots fired in the 600 block of East Railroad Street around 5am and two spent shell casings were found in front of 620 East Railroad, ten feet from the home. Video from a neighbor showed Hall in the area.
More calls for shots fired came around 2am and 4am on March 25 for in the 1400 block and 800 block of East Railroad respectively.
Around 7:15pm March 25, an off-duty police officer called the station, having seen Hall in the 500 block of East Market Street.
Police made contact with Hall and he was taken into custody. He was not in possession of the handgun at the time.
Questioned at the borough police station, he said he had a 1911-style pistol that he’d received from a friend for safekeeping.
Police said he admitted to firing shots on East Railroad.
Additionally, he did not have a concealed carry permit.
Hall was arraigned by On-Call Magisterial District Judge James Reiley Saturday night and committed to Schuylkill County Prison on $10,000 straight cash bail.
He is facing reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, firearms not to be carried without a license, loitering and prowling, illegal possession of a weapon, and illegal discharge of a firearm.
