MAHANOY CITY – The Mahanoy Area Class of 2020 took one last ride through the Mahanoy Valley as high school students before receiving their diplomas in a rain-shortened ceremony Wednesday morning.

A parade celebrating the graduates, originally set for 3:00pm, was pushed back to 9am, traversing the majority of the Mahanoy Area School District, including outlying villages such as Morea, New Boston, Barnesville, Delano, and Park Place.

Graduates waved at passersby from their sunroofs, truck beds, and even the back of a classic roadster as they paraded.

In Delano, a family — Vicki and Tina Pugh and Izabel and Lily Linn — watched the parade at Lakeview and Hazle, wishing congratulations and good luck to the 66 Golden Bear grads.

Beginning at the school, the parade covered the southern and eastern parts of the district first, heading to New Boston and Morea, Barnesville, Delano, and Park Place before making its way back to Mahanoy City. From there, the parade went to Mahanoy Plane and back.

The parade ended at the school complex, where the grads were set to receive their diplomas in an abbreviated ceremony in advance of tonight’s virtual graduation.

Downpours moved through the area and forced the ceremony inside.
