Mahanoy firefighters make quick work of basement fire

MAHANOY CITY – Fire crews made quick work of a basement fire at an unoccupied home on East Mahanoy Street here Tuesday evening.

Mahanoy City West End firefighters were called to the area of 500 East Mahanoy Street around 9:15pm for a smoke investigation.

Arriving crews found smoke coming from a home at 534 East Mahanoy Street, and the call was upgraded to a structure fire, bringing crews from the remaining four Mahanoy City fire companies.

Within minutes, the fire was brought under control.

Fire officials at the scene said the fire was contained to the basement of 534, and was accidental in nature. The home is unoccupied, though the property owner maintains the home and was on site maintaining the coal stove today.

All fire crews were clear of the scene by 10:00pm.
