Mahanoy community gets into Christmas spirit at Tree Lighting
MAHANOY CITY – The latest community to kick off the Christmas season was Mahanoy City, where Santa Claus arrived on a horse drawn carriage to light the town Christmas tree Saturday evening.
The tree lighting was put on by the Mahanoy City Social and Athletic Club, which has sponsored it since 1935, and Mahanoy City Community Events.
On a stage at Centre and Catawissa Streets, by the Christmas tree and the veterans memorial, several community groups and singers performed.
Those included the Mahanoy Area Elementary Band, Chelsea Ferraro, Alivia Economy, and more.
Led by the Mahanoy City Police Department and Mahanoy Area High School Band, Santa Claus arrived aboard a horse-drawn carriage from Leiby’s, of Tamaqua, and, after a number from the band and a countdown, illuminated the tree.
The events weren’t limited to the site of the tree lighting. Down Centre Street either way, vendors were set up at the Humane Fire Co. and Citizens Fire Co. for fundraisers, and a petting zoo was set up next to St. Luke’s.
Leiby’s carriage also offered rides throughout the night.
The Mahanoy Area Chamber also announced that their “Miracle on Main Street” campaign has reached halfway.
