MAHANOY CITY – The Mahanoy Area community came together last weekend to dedicate the newly-rebuilt veterans memorial at Centre and Catawissa Streets in town.
Rain forced the event indoors, into the bays of the Citizens firehouse across the street.
The Upper Schuylkill Marching Band performed a number of patriotic tunes before the program began.
Dave Jarrett served as guest speaker, recalling various anchors of patriotism from his childhood and comparisons to those of the servicemembers of his age at the time.
State Rep. Dane Watro (R-Schuylkill/Luzerne) also spoke during the ceremony. Watro is an Iraq War veteran.
His remarks focused on the Mahanoy Area students participating in the ceremony, including Ben Bux, Sienna Napoli, and Nick Manley. Watro challenged the students to remember the service and sacrifice of servicemembers and, if they see a veteran, to thank them.
The ceremony ended with the Shoener brothers, John and Jacob, of the Upper Schuylkill Marching Band performing Taps and a 21-gun salute by the American Legion Post.
The memorial was then uncovered and a wreath laid.
