MAHANOY CITY – Mahanoy City borough approved the demolition of an abandoned home’s collapsing porch roof at Tuesday’s meeting.

Council approved the motion to take down the porch roof at 329-331 West Mahanoy Street at a cost of $1,000.

Code Enforcement Officer Bill Killian said the porch poses a public safety hazard and the property owners are incarcerated.

“It’s a hazard to the people walking by it,” Killian said.

A member of the public objected to the move, saying that he had heard “years ago” that the borough cannot take any action on property it doesn’t own.

“We’re not going to risk taxpayers because of what you heard years ago,” Councilman Matthew Tacelosky said.

In other business, council:

  • tabled discussion of a trailer ordinance;
  • tabled a garage/driveway line policy
  • approved rescinding a police mutual aid agreement with Rush Township, at the township’s request;
  • approved an animal control police training class for police Chief Thomas Rentschler;
  • approved the issuing of a request for proposals for the Mahanoy Area Comprehensive Plan.
