MABS hires operator, approves new customer payment program, may timber land

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - The Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah Offices.

RAVEN RUN – The Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah (MABS) hired a new employee, approved instituting a new payment program, and may timber land, the authority discussed at their meeting Thursday.

The authority board met at their offices in Raven Run.

With a 4-0 vote, the authority approved the hiring of an uncertified operator for the water plant. Their name was not provided, pending their acceptance of the offer.

The authority also approved instituting a new payment program for customers.

“The billing system we use is coming out with a payment program for customers that they can make payments over the phone, online, they can make payments with checks, PayPal, credit cards, however they want to do it,” Jennifer Hepler, office supervisor, said. She said that, as an early adopter of the program, they won’t be charged for it.

The authority voted 4-0 to approve it.

MABS is also looking into timbering some of their land to raise funds to replace their trucks.

“Our trucks are starting to nickel-and-dime us,” Hepler said.

She said that the Mahanoy Township Authority is raising $300,000 from select-timbering some of their land.

Board member John Szczyglak said it was a good idea and suggested working with member Leo Pietkiewicz, who did similar work for a hunting club the two are members of.

Solicitor Joe Nahas agreed, and also suggested selling its water to other entities beyond its distribution network.

In other business, the authority congratulated Randi Wood, member Gary Wood’s daughter, who won District XI gold in track and field.

Plant operator Dan Salvadore said plant upgrades are continuing to move along.

Foreman Bill Moyer said “Everything is going well in the distribution department,” and said that they are up-to-date on grass cutting and their new employee is working well.

Hepler said the authority is currently under budget by $52,000 so far this year.
