Local Rite Aid stores listed for sale following bankruptcy filing

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Rite Aid in Shenandoah on Sept. 16, 2020.
SHENANDOAH – A day after the ailing pharmacy chain filed for a second bankruptcy, Rite Aid listed all of its stores for sale, including the stores in our area.
The locations in Shenandoah, Ashland, Mahanoy City, Frackville, and Hazle Township are all included in the 1,194 leases listed for sale.
They are the only major pharmacy chain in northern Schuylkill County — the next closest chain would be CVS in Mount Carmel, Pottsville, Hazleton, and Berwick. Redner’s operates a pharmacy in the Turkey Run section of Shenandoah and an independent outfit, Morris Drug, is in Mahanoy City.
Rite Aid had declared bankruptcy in 2023 and emerged from bankruptcy in September. Our area’s stores survived the waves of closures that came under that bankruptcy.
In a letter to customers, the chain says the majority of stores will remain open and operating for the next few months.
