MAHANOY CITY – Santa Claus arrived in Mahanoy City aboard a horse-drawn trolley, escorted by the Mahanoy Area High School Band and Mahanoy City Police prior to the borough’s tree lighting on Nov. 25.
Santa, accompanied by Mahanoy City Mayor Patti Schnitzius arrived at Veterans Memorial Park at Centre and Catawissa Streets, made their way through the awaiting crowd, and illuminated the tree.
The tree was donated by the Mahanoy City Social Club, which has donated the borough’s Christmas Tree every year since 1937.
Following the lighting, local residents and students performed, including the Mahanoy Area High School Band and Choir, Mahanoy Area CCD, Alivia Economy, Allison Kline, Eric Moucheron, Nathan Macleary, Kathryn McCarthy, Madison Denchy, Kayla Schmerfeld, and Kirsten Nunes.
Concurrent to the event, horse-drawn trolley rides were offered at the Citizens Fire Company, while photos with Santa could be taken at the Humane Fire Company. Also at the Humane, a camp fire was set up in front of the station, where hot dogs and s’mores prepared by the fire could be purchased.
Also during the tree lighting was an event at the St. Cecilia Hall and Chapel on Catawissa Street.
The 2nd Annual Christmas Around the World, sponsored by the ACTION Youth Group, featured booths portraying Christmas in the countries of Austria, Britain, Lithuania, Mexico, Sweden, Italy, Ireland, and China, among others.
Also at the event was a live Nativity scene, and a petting zoo was set up in front of the hall.
