Legislators announce grants for Ryan Twp. Fire UTV, restoration of fire damaged Tamaqua building

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL FILE - Flames damage a row of buildings in downtown Tamaqua in 2022. One of these is set to be restored thanks to a state grant.

TAMAQUA – Two state legislators announced Tuesday grants for one local fire company to buy a UTV for off-road emergencies and for the restoration of a fire-damaged Tamaqua building.

They are among $1.4 Million in Community and Economic Development grants coming to eastern Schuylkill County.

State Senator Dave Argall (R-29) and State Rep. Jamie Barton (R-124) announced the grants.

Ryan Township is receiving $69,639 to purchase a UTV to respond to emergencies on state game lands.

Tamaqua Borough, on behalf of the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership, is receiving $79,444 to restore the facade of a fire-damaged building at 117 West Broad. That fire occurred in 2022.

“Towns and neighborhoods in all corners of Schuylkill County will benefit from this funding,” said Argall.

“Our municipalities have so many projects in the works trying to make our area a better place to live,” Barton said. “Unfortunately, many of these projects are very expensive, and our townships and boroughs don’t always have enough cash on hand. That’s why I’m proud to have worked with Sen. Argall to bring funding back to our area.”

This funding was awarded through the Statewide Local Share Account program, which distributes gaming revenue to projects that support community and economic development.

Other grants awarded were to Deer Lake to restore the Deer Lake Dam, New Ringgold to widen Routes 443 and 895, Port Clinton to relocate a sewer main, and West Penn Township to purchase a new asphalt paver.
