Lavelle Road closed due to second train derailment in Butler Township in as many days
LAVELLE – The link between here and Locustdale is closed Tuesday due to the second train derailment in as many days in Butler Township.
A portion of a Reading and Northern train jumped the tracks south of the crossing at Lavelle Road around midday.
The derailment, which was well into the woodlands south of the road, left two coal cars blocking Lavelle Road.
Butler Township Police at the scene said the derailment involved at least three pieces of rolling stock and would take longer to clean up than Monday’s derailment on Dutchtown Road.
Firefighters closed Lavelle Road between Locustdale and Lavelle.
Township Police said the railroad planned to move the two coal cars blocking Lavelle Road, which were not derailed, off the road to keep it open while crews up righted the derailed cars.
The derailment happened along the same branch line as Monday’s derailment.
