HAZLE TOWNSHIP, Luzerne County – The final Kmart store in the region is set to close in early April, according to a statement released by parent company Sears Holdings on Thursday.
The Kmart in Hazle Township, one of three anchors at the Laurel Mall, is among a list of 64 Kmart stores nationwide that will be shuttered by the end of April, including 10 in the commonwealth.
“Sears Holdings continues its strategic assessment of the productivity of our Kmart and Sears store base and will continue to right size our store footprint in number and size. In the process, as previously announced we will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members,” the company said in a press release.
The Kmart store opened at the Luzerne County shopping center in 1994, and has been the closest to the Shenandoah Area since the closure of the store at the Schuylkill Mall.
According to the company’s statement, liquidation sales are set to begin as early as January 12 at some stores.
“Eligible associates impacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores,” the release continued.
