HS SOCCER: Devils open season with Southern rout, 6-1

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Shenandoah Valley's Ayden Zamudio contends for possession.

SHENANDOAH – Shenandoah Valley’s top goal scorer last year opened the 2024 campaign with a hat trick as the Blue Devils remain undefeated at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

They hosted Southern Columbia Saturday morning in the season opener.

Senior Ayden Zamudio broke the ice, scoring the first goal of the year early in the first half. It was the first of three on the day for the captain.

“We started slow,” Head Coach John Burke told the Sentinel postgame. “That keeper did a great job. He had about 15 saves. A lot of them were right to him, but he did what he had to do.”

“Our guys did good,” Burke added. “Most of them played 80 minutes. I’m proud of them.”

Sam Mentusky added two goals to the Devils’ tally before heading to the Columbia Montour Vo-Tech football game, where he made a 40-yard field goal.

Joan Menjivar also scored late in the game, assisted by Kevin Gasca.

Saturday’s victory is Shenandoah’s third straight at home. The Devils had only two home games in the program’s first season last year.

They’re back at home Monday night, hosting Tri-Valley at 6:15pm.
