HS SOCCER: Devils continue winning ways in 6-1 home victory over Minersville
SHENANDOAH – Seldom has there been a team like this in Columbia Blue and White.
Those few that have come before became legends in the halls of 805 West Centre Street.
Going into Monday night’s game, the Shenandoah Valley boys soccer squad sat undefeated atop the Schuylkill League Division II and 9-1 overall on the year, outscoring their opponents 60-9. Shenandoah players sat atop or near the top of every offensive stat chart.
Perhaps just as impressively, the Devils remained undefeated at Veterans Memorial Stadium in midway through the second season of the program.
Monday night, the Devils hosted fellow Division II foe Minersville (7-2, 4-1 D2), who sat in second place in the league standings, one loss behind Shenandoah.
Shenandoah Valley also hosted Youth Day, bringing out the players of the Shenandoah Youth Soccer Association and their families. Those, coupled with Blue Devil faithful, filled the stands.
The Miners struck first, scoring under 10 minutes into the game.
Sam Mentusky, assisted by Joan Menjivar — the Schuylkill League’s leading scorer with 18 goals and 15 assists — buried the tying goal. Mentusky is fifth in scoring in the league.
Ayden Zamudio, assisted by Menjivar, added another before Menjivar scored one of his own with an assist from Kevin Gasca, giving the Devils a 3-1 edge at halftime.
In the second half, Zamudio added two more for a hat trick along with another from Mentusky.
The Devils, who have already clinched a berth in the District XI playoffs, are on the road again Wednesday at Tri-Valley.
