HS FOOTBALL: Vikings comeback gives Nativity first loss of 2020
SAINT CLAIR – Williams Valley only led once in Saturday night’s bout against Nativity BVM at a misty Veterans Memorial Stadium in Saint Clair, and they led by a slim margin.
Though, their lead came when it counted — in the waning minutes of the final quarter.
The Green Wave took an early lead, thanks to a pair of #2 Jacob Hoffman rushes, leading by 14 at the end of one.
Another run — by QB #5 Cody Miller — would give Nativity a 21-0 advantage in the second.
The Vikings, ranked #8 in Class A in the state by the Harrisburg Patriot-News, would answer, in the form of a Bryce Herb to Jesse Engle 11-yard pass and a Logan Williard run, to end the first half with a 7-point deficit.
The second half began in Nativity’s favor, with FB #7 Stephan Spolski returning the opening kickoff to the house, giving the Green Wave a 14-point advantage.
It would take another quarter-and-a-half and a host of penalties against the Green Wave for Williams Valley to close the gap.
Another Williard run for Williams Valley and a 41-yard Miller-to-Jacob Hoffman pass would lead to a 15-point gap entering the 4th quarter.
An Herb-to-Engle pass for 15-yards with a successful two-point conversion would bring the Vikings within six in the 4th, and a Herb run would put the Vikings up by one.
Williams Valley held off a late charge by Nativity to lock up the 35-34 victory, handing Nativity their first loss on the season.
Next week, Williams Valley (2-1) faces Mahanoy Area (2-1) in Mahanoy City, while Nativity (2-1) travels to Quakake to face the 1-2 Colts of Marian Catholic.
