FOUNTAIN SPRINGS – For the first half of Friday’s game, it seemed as though the Fountain Springs area was set to become Tornado Alley, but the Spartans weren’t too keen on allowing their rivals to run away.
In fact, the only points scored by Mount Carmel would come in the first half, when they led North Schuylkill 17-7.
The game began as a defensive battle of sorts, with the first score being a Mount Carmel field goal with 2:42 remaining in the first quarter, quickly answered by a #6 Jaden Leiby run for North Schuylkill’s first touchdown.
Mount Carmel retook the lead with about 6:40 left in the half with a touchdown, bringing the score to 10-7 Red Tornadoes. A #10 Noah Berkoski run with about a minute remaining in the half led to the halftime score of 17-7.
Early in the third quarter, #39 Zack Chowansky would break away from a long touchdown run for the Spartans, cutting the deficit to four, 13-17.
Backed up against their own endzone, the Red Tornadoes gave up a safety when QB #13 Tom Reisinger, pressured in the endzone, lost the football, recovered by #29 Damon Dowkus.
#32 Jake Green would give the Spartans a go-ahead score early in the fourth, and the final score of the game would come with 2:28 left to play, another Chowansky run.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 4-1, while Mount Carmel falls to 3-2. Next week, North Schuylkill faces Jim Thorpe at home, and Mount Carmel faces Mifflinburg at the Silver Bowl.
