MAHANOY CITY – There will not be a football game in Mahanoy City this weekend, after Mahanoy Area’s opponent for their final home game forfeited.

The high school and football boosters both posted to their Facebook pages, saying Marian Catholic (1-7) forfeited the game.

Mahanoy Area’s senior recognition ceremonies were scheduled for the game and, according to the school, that will still go on. Mahanoy’s senior football, band members, and cheerleaders will be recognized in a ceremony starting at 6:00pm at Alumni Stadium.

Marian Catholic was coming off their first win of the season against Shenandoah Valley last week and is on the verge of making the District XI 1A playoffs.

Mahanoy Area stood at 5-3 entering this Friday’s matchup.

UPDATE: Marian has cancelled the remainder of its 2019 season due to a lack of players.
UPDATE #2: Mahanoy’s Senior Appreciation will be next Friday at Shenandoah Valley, according to the Mahanoy Area High School Facebook page.

“Shenandoah Valley’s superintendent contacted Dr. Green tonight to offer us to have our senior recognition night during the football game against Shenandoah Valley next week. Therefore, our senior recognition night will now be held at Shenandoah valley next Friday, October 25, 2019. Our athletic director, Mr. Cray, will be making arrangements with Shenandoah Valley’s athletic director and will be getting more information out in the future when it becomes available,” the school wrote.
