MAHANOY CITY – For another year, the Damato/Szematowicz Trophy will stay in Mahanoy City, as the Golden Bears defeated Shenandoah Valley 45-20, and advance to the District XI playoffs.
The Bears needed a win, and a loss by Palmerton to make the playoff field, and, as the Blue Bombers fell 47-21 to Northern Lehigh, their fate was sealed.
Shenandoah Valley was seeking their first win on the season, and finish the 2018 season winless.
Mahanoy’s scoring began quickly, as the Bears took control of the game both offensively and defensively early.
By the end of the first, Mahanoy led 21-0, a lead which would grow to 35-6 by the half.
Shenandoah Valley answered twice in the second, including within minutes of the games conclusion, though Mahanoy kept their lead, finishing the game 45-20.
Two MVPs were named at the game’s conclusion from both teams. Mahanoy’s MJ Terry and Shenandoah Valley’s Dean Dombrowksi were selected for the honor.
Then, the Golden Bears were presented the Damato/Szematowicz Trophy, and the celebration began.
