Mahanoy brings trophy home again, downs Shen. Valley 60-12

SHENANDOAH – The American Legion Damato/Szematowicz Trophy returned to Shenandoah, albeit briefly, as the Bears left no question that it was coming back to Mahanoy City with them Friday night.
It was the 111th meeting between the Shenandoah and Mahanoy football squads, both of whom are bound for district playoffs next week.
The Bears scored early and often, as senior running back Alexis Perez broke away from Shenandoah defenders on the first play of their first drive to score with about nine minutes left in the first quarter.
Senior quarterback Danny Lawrence did similar with about 6:30 left in the first, giving Mahanoy an early 13-0 lead.
With the same amount of time left in the second quarter, trailing 40-0, Shenandoah found itself on the board after a pass from senior quarterback Joseph ‘Junebug’ Karvois to sophomore Joey Vevasis.
Shortly into the very next drive, Lawrence would find the endzone again on a long run, giving Mahanoy a 46-6 advantage.
The final score came at 60-12 in Mahanoy’s favor.
Following the game, a player from each team was selected to receive the Senator James J. Rhoades Memorial Award in recognition of their outstanding performance. For Mahanoy Area, it was Lawrence, and for Shenandoah Valley, it was Karvois.
Immediately thereafter, the Damato/Szematowicz Trophy was given to Mahanoy Head Coach Dave Holman, who then passed it on to his team.
Mahanoy Area finishes their regular season at 7-3 and will advance to the District XI Class 2A playoffs next week. Shenandoah Valley finishes their season winless, 0-10, though will still advance to the District XI Class 1A playoffs, expected to face Williams Valley in Williamstown, Dauphin County.
