HS FOOTBALL: Last second touchdown elevates NS past Tornadoes in comeback, 34-27

DON SCICCHITANO / SPECIAL TO SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - North Schuylkill's Joey Flail eludes two Mount Carmel defenders during their matchup on August 25, 2023.
MOUNT CARMEL – A last minute touchdown propelled North Schuylkill past Mount Carmel to begin the season unblemished.
The two squads engaged in a dogfight throughout Friday’s matchup, exchanging blows in the first half before a Mount Carmel score gave the Tornadoes a 20-13 lead at the half.
Mount Carmel would build on that lead in the 3rd quarter, holding a 27-13 advantage until three minutes remained in that quarter.
That’s when North Schuylkill QB Trevor Minalda connected with Collin McGee for a 45-yard touchdown.
With 8 minutes remaining in the game, the Spartans would knot things up at 27-apiece, thanks to a Minalda pass to Joey Flail.
Under a minute remained when North Schuylkill scored the go-ahead touchdown that made the difference, as Ricky Halford broke away for a 30-yard touchdown rush.
The Spartans begin the season 1-0 and are home next week, hosting Blue Mountain.
