‘Her heart was Shenandoah:’ Council remembers Eileen Burke

Special meeting scheduled for Thursday to fill vacancy

SHENANDOAH – Borough Council’s monthly meeting Monday began with a moment of silence in remembrance of one of their own.

Councilwoman Eileen Burke passed away on Nov. 25 at the age of 67.

She won a four-year seat on council in 2019.

At the request of Mayor Andrew Szczyglak, a moment of silence began Monday’s meeting.

“We are obviously saddened and weakened by the loss and we appreciate all of the work and effort Eileen put into helping the community and her passion for doing so,” Council President Katie Catizone said. “She will be missed.”

“Eileen had a good heart,” Szczyglak added. “Her heart was Shenandoah.”

Council approved a motion to advertise the open seat and scheduled a special meeting for Thursday at 6pm to vote appoint a replacement. Pennsylvania Borough Code requires the vacancy be filled within 30 days of a member’s death, Szczyglak said.

Anyone interested in filling the position should provide notice in writing to the borough.

Council noted that three letters expressing interest had already been received. Those letters came from Mike Uholik, Joseph R. Boris, and former mayor Michael Whitecavage.
