Hazleton woman accused of leading police on chase, crashing car on 924
SHEPPTON – A Hazleton woman is free on bail after East Union Township Police say she ran from them when they attempted a traffic stop.
Nayeli Cruz Martinez, 19, of 802 Lafayette Court, is facing a felony count of fleeing police along with summary traffic offenses for the chase earlier this month.
According to the criminal complaint filed by Sergeant Christopher Dimmick, he was monitoring traffic in the 1000 block of Center Street in Sheppton around 1pm Jan. 17 when Martinez passed in a Honda CRV.
Dimmick wrote that Martinez’s registration came back as expired, and he then attempted to pull her over.
Martinez instead fled, Dimmick wrote, and led police on a pursuit southbound towards Shenandoah.
Speeds eventually reached 70mph and in turns, Martinez crossed the double yellow line twice.
Two miles south of Sheppton, she lost control of the vehicle, struck a guiderail, and spun the car.
She was then ordered out of the vehicle and taken into custody.
Martinez was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker and briefly committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post 10% of $10,000 bail.
She later posted that bail and is free, awaiting a preliminary hearing before Kilker on Feb. 8.
