Harrisburg woman killed in I-81 crash
HAZLE TWP., Luzerne County – A Harrisburg woman is dead and and a 1-year-old child is in the hospital after a crash on Interstate 81 here Wednesday afternoon.
The crash happened just before 2:00pm, State Police at Hazleton said, near mile marker 142.
Amiyah Sherard, 19, of Harrisburg, was headed north in a 2012 Chevy Impala when she left the west side of the road.
Her Impala crossed the center median and struck a 2020 International tractor-trailer, driven by John Ripley, 51, of Marathon, NY, headed southbound.
The truck drove off the west side of the highway and down an embankment.
Sherard suffered multiple traumatic injuries, troopers said, and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt.
A one-year-old child in the vehicle was transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital for treatment of injuries, and transferred to Geisinger Danville for further treatment. The child was in a proper safety seat.
Ripley was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Hazleton for treatment as well, and was wearing his seatbelt.
