MAHANOY CITY – Like many other fire companies in the region, the Good American Hose Co. of Mahanoy City hosts an annual bazaar, or block party.
This year, though, the bazaar, held at the fire company at Mahanoy and 8th Streets in the borough, commemorates the company’s 125th anniversary, or quasquicentennial.
On Friday, the event kicked off with a fire truck parade featuring over 40 fire apparatus from across Schuylkill County, as well as some from Dauphin, Berks, Northumberland, Carbon and Northampton Counties as well.
Also on Friday, a commemorative stamp cancellation was held in conjunction of the US Postal Service.
Hundreds of local residents came out for the event on Friday, as a brief sun shower revealed a rainbow in the eastern sky.
Food items, such as bleenies, burgers, and pierogies, were served inside the fire company’s newer building on the east side of eighth street, where tables were also set up. Outside in the parking lot were two tents, one with an alcoholic refreshments stand, and another with more tables. Also outside, DJ Party Time provided musical entertainment.
In the social hall was bingo, and outside were a variety of games.
The event continues Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the kitchen is open from 4pm to 11pm with entertainment from Drive Train, and on Sunday, the kitchen is open from 4pm to 10pm, with DJ Party Time returning.
