Gilberton firefighters make quick work of van fire, save homes

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - A Ford E-Series van is aflame on Water Street in Mahanoy Plane.
MAHANOY PLANE – The quick work of Gilberton firefighters saved at least two homes in this section of the borough today.
Firefighters were called to the 2400 block of Water Street around 7:30pm for a reported van fire.
Crews arrived to find a third generation Ford E-Series van aflame.

Engine 44-15 from the Continental Fire Co. in Gilberton arrived on scene first and firefighters quickly stretched a line and quelled the blaze, which had grown to engulf the van and endanger at least two homes.
A home at 2409 Water Street had melted siding, and apparent smoke damage was seen on a home at 2412 Water Street.
Had the fire burned unabated any longer than it did, fire officials believe it could have caught one of the nearby homes.
