Frackville hires part-time cop, extends offer to potential full-timer; approves road program

FRACKVILLE – Frackville has a new part-time police officer, may soon have a new full-time officer, and will have some resurfaced streets soon.

Borough Council approved last week the hiring of Jerry Lengel as a part-time patrolman for the police force.

Solicitor Mark Semanchik also asked council to approve a conditional offer to a potential full-time officer, whose name was not provided.

That officer is currently employed elsewhere and Semanchik asked that the background check and examination process be done in a way that would not jeopardize his current employment.

The police department currently has two full-time officers — Chief Paul Olson and Patrolman Joseph Murton — after much of the prior department left and community members requested Olson’s resignation.

Council also extended the application deadline for full and part-time officers by 60 days.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, council also approved the 2023 road program, awarding the projects to New Enterprise Stone and Lime at a cost of $82,991.25

Work will be done on the following streets:

  • North Willow from Frack to Washington;
  • Stevens from Chestnut to Oak;
  • North Cherry from Spring to East Pine;
  • The intersection of Centre and Oak;
  • South Penn from Laurel to Arch;
  • South Third from Chestnut to Arch;
  • and West John from Elm to Stevens.

Council also approved a motion to expose eight properties to sheriff’s sale for nonpayment of garbage bills.

It was also noted that this year’s Memorial Day parade is set for 9am on that holiday.
