Four properties approved for demolition in Girard Estate program

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – Four properties are set to be demolished as part of the Girard Estate demolition program.

West Mahanoy Township supervisors approved the demolitions at Tuesday night’s regular township meeting.

The properties are all along Mount Olive Boulevard in William Penn and Lost Creek, at 217, 219, 493, and 587. Two of the homes — 217 and 219 — were on last year’s list.

The Philadelphia-based Girard Estate owns most of the land in the township and has demolished dozens of abandoned structures on their land since around 2010 as part of the program.

They are on land leased from the Girard Estate and the taxes and leases have not been paid.

In other business, supervisors:

  • approved a bid to purchase 1157 West Lloyd Street;
  • the hiring of Mark Melusky as a full-time road crew member;
  • the hiring of three seasonal road crew members;
  • tabling a decision on abandoning West Penn Street in Brownsville.
