Flooding impacts Gilberton; firefighters respond for pump detail

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Floodwaters cover a section of Coal and Railroad Streets in Gilberton early Friday morning.

GILBERTON – Firefighters from as far as Saint Clair and Ringtown are operating at this hour to pump floodwaters out of a section of Gilberton borough.

Firefighters were called for the pump detail just before 1:00am in the area of 500 Railroad Street.

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – Girardville’s Rangers Hose Co. engine pumps water across Reading and Northern Railroad tracks early Friday morning.

Floodwaters had covered at least a three block section of Railroad Street, from near the Route 924 overpass up to at least Coal Street.

Mahanoy Plane, Mahanoy City, Girardville, Shenandoah, Saint Clair, and Ringtown firefighters operated pumps near the Gilberton overpass and at the west end of Railroad Street.

The pumps sent water over Reading and Northern railroad tracks onto mining lands.

This area is prone to flooding, including a similar instance in August of 2018.
