BROWNSVILLE – A vacant home in this West Mahanoy Township village was destroyed by a raging fire late Monday night.

Firefighters from William Penn and Altamont were called to the 1100 block of West Centre Street for reports of a vehicle fire around 10:30pm.

The first arriving units found a home engulfed in flames and the call was upgraded to a structure fire, bringing crews from Shenandoah, Girardville, Shenandoah Heights, and more to the scene.

As fire crews responded, smoke blanketed much of Shenandoah borough’s west end.

The porch of the home, followed by the building itself, collapsed about 15 minutes into the firefight.

William Penn Fire Chief Chris Miscannon said the fire began as a vehicle fire, and spread to the home.

No one was hurt in the blaze, he said.

A Tanker Task Force was called for the incident, and a fill site was established at Coal and Walnut Streets in Shenandoah.

The fire was brought under control in about half an hour, and out-of-town units were clear of the scene in short order.
