Five displaced, cat rescued from Mahanoy City blaze

MAHANOY CITY – Firefighters from across northern Schuylkill County contained a blaze to two homes and saved a cat Tuesday afternoon in this borough.

Firefighters were called to 724 West Centre Street just after 5:00pm for the fire.

Mahanoy City Fire Chief Dan Markiewicz said the fire began in the basement and spread through the void space between 722 and 724 West Centre.

“We were able to contain and isolate it before it went into the two exposures,” Markiewicz told the Sentinel. “Everybody did a hell of a job.”

Markiewicz said no injuries were reported in the fire.

Mahanoy City West End Lt. David Truskowsky said the damage was contained to 722 and 724 West Centre, and five people are displaced: four from 724 and one from 722. The displaced person from 722 will be staying with a relative, he said.

Truskowsky added that animals, including a cat, were rescued from 724.

The fire was brought under control in about an hour.

Firefighters from Shenandoah, Girardville, Frackville, Tamaqua, Pottsville, Ryan Township, and Englewood, among others, assisted Mahanoy City firefighters at the scene.

Also assisting was Hometown Fire Police, Shenandoah Police, Frackville Ambulance, and Mahanoy City Ambulance.
