First month of recycling return sees around 25 households participate

SHENANDOAH – About 25 households participated in the return of Shenandoah’s recycling program in its first month, council said Monday.

March was the first month of the new program, which takes place monthly on every second Friday. Then, the borough will pick up residents’ plastic bottles for recycling.

“It’s a start, but we’d obviously like to see that number go higher,” Councilman John Thomas said. “Eventually, there’s the hope that we bring back full recycling, but we need more people to participate to make it worthwhile.”

Last month, council said the program is voluntary. Residents who still have bins from the prior program are asked to use those bins. If not, an empty trash can would suffice.

Thomas said last month that the borough hopes the money saved from tipping fees would offset the cost of the recycling program.
