WEST HAZLETON, Luzerne County – A Hazleton City firefighter suffered a minor injury battling a blaze that damaged a duplex Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters from across southern Luzerne and northern Schuylkill counties were called to 117 East Broad Street in West Hazleton just before 7:00pm.

“When we got here, we had heavy fire in the second floor on the A-side,” said West Hazleton Fire Chief Richard Sparks. “Fire was impinging up against the exposure on that same side.”

“They got in and had the fire knocked down quickly,” Sparks added. Fire melted the siding on a duplex at 119 East Broad Street, he said, though they were able to keep the fire from spreading to that building.

All occupants of the impacted buildings were accounted for, Sparks said.

“Firefighters did a tremendous job, this thing was really rolling,” Sparks added.

A second alarm was struck early in the incident, bringing McAdoo firefighters from Schuylkill County as well as others from lower Luzerne County.

No occupants were injured, Sparks said, though a Hazleton City firefighter suffered a wrist or hand injury and was taken for treatment.

The upper floors of the 117 side of the impacted duplex sustained heavy fire damage, Sparks said.

Fire crews responding included West Hazleton, Hazleton City, Sugarloaf, Valley Regional, McAdoo, and Hazle Township, among others. They were assisted by Lehigh Valley EMS, Greater Hazleton Ambulance, and Sugarloaf and West Hazleton Police.
