Fire damages Mt. Carmel home

MOUNT CARMEL, Northumberland County – No one was hurt when a fire broke out in the attic of a South Hickory Street home Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters from Mount Carmel, Atlas, and Shamokin were called to 132 South Hickory Street in Mt. Carmel just before 5:30pm.

“When I got here, there was smoke coming out of the attic,” said Asst. Chief Jack Williams, Anthracite Fire Co. “Within about two minutes, there were flames coming out of the attic.”

Williams said no injuries were reported. The homeowner told him when he arrived that three people were inside, though no one was found after two searches.

Fire damage was contained to the attic of 132, and the lower floors sustained smoke and water damage.

The fire was knocked down in less than half an hour, with out-of-town crews clearing around 6:00pm.

Firefighters from all Mt. Carmel fire companies, as well as the Atlas Fire Co. and Shamokin Bureau of Fire responded to the scene. Mount Carmel Borough and Township police assisted at the scene, as did Area Services EMS.
