FD: Family member, bystanders rescued victim from burning Rock Glen home
ROCK GLEN – A man was rescued by a family member and bystanders as his home burned in this Black Creek Township village Tuesday evening.
The fire broke out around 5:30pm at 102 Falls Street in Rock Glen, about three miles north of Nuremberg.
First dispatched as a house fire with entrapment, The Nuremberg-Weston Fire Company said in a Facebook post that the homeowner was rescued by bystanders and a relative. He is “well known to the area,” they said, and suffered serious burns.
“Please keep the homeowner in your thoughts and prayers tonight,” the fire company wrote.
He was originally taken to the Nuremberg Park for an air medical flight, but the helicopter was cancelled due to snow squalls in the valleys.
When firefighters arrived, the home was engulfed in flames and a second alarm was quickly struck. Flames had also spread to utility wires and were spreading to a garage out back.
Crews worked for about three hours at the scene and a state police fire marshal was on scene to investigate.
A cause was not released Tuesday night.
Responding were firefighters from Nuremberg-Weston, Sheppton-Oneida, Sugarloaf, Hazle Township, Valley Regional, Harwood, Beaver Township, West Hazleton, and Ringtown Valley, as well as medics from Valley Regional, Sugarloaf, and Lehigh Valley Health Network.
The Tomhicken Road — the main road through Rock Glen and a vital link between Mountain Grove and Nuremberg and the Hazleton Area — was closed during the firefight.
