Ex-Girardville chief hired part-time in East Union; residents question vacant chief position

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL FILE - Girardville Police Chief Fred Lahovski salutes during a ceremony honoring a Girardville Medal of Honor recipient on March 12, 2021.

SHEPPTON – East Union Township has two more part-time police officers and one of them is a former chief in our area.

Frederick Lahovski and Anthony DiVirgilio were hired at Monday’s township supervisors meeting at a rate of $24/hr.

You may recognize Lahovski’s name.

He was Girardville’s police chief for about a year beginning in 2021.

DiVirgilio has also been officer-in-charge in McAdoo.

Supervisors also discussed pay for another part-time officer, Scott Michalesko. Supervisors voted to approve raising his compensation to $24/hr provided he signs an employment contract.

Two residents questioned supervisors regarding the vacant police chief position.

“What’s the hold up,” Ray Trojan asked.

Supervisors Chairman Kyle Mummey said supervisors have interviewed several candidates for police chief, but chose not to move forward with those candidates.

“That’s something the board is probably going to revisit in the near future,” Mummey said.

Doug Litwhiler is currently officer-in-charge and, though part-time, is working full-time hours, Mummey said.
