Ex-East Union officer accused of slashing tires in the Poconos

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL FILE - East Union Township Police Officer Doug Litwhiler

SCOTRUN – East Union Township’s recently-fired officer-in-charge is now on the other side of a criminal complaint.

Doug Litwhiler, 41, of Ringtown, was charged by Pocono Township Police on Oct. 23 with misdemeanor criminal mischief.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Officer Liam Rebetje, the charges stem from a Nov. 2024 incident in which tires were slashed and a truck was scratched at Great Wolf Lodge in Monroe County.

Police were called to the lodge on Nov. 11, 2024 when a man noticed the side of his truck had a large scratch and two tires had been slashed. The damage totalled $4,170.58.

The victim’s girlfriend, police said, had been threatened by Litwhiler the day prior.

Litwhiler’s vehicle was captured on the property on the day of the incident for approximately five minutes on the day of the incident and a search warrant for cell phone records also showed Litwhiler at the property.

According to the complaint, Litwhiler initially told police that he had never been to Great Wolf Lodge, later saying he wanted to check out the resort, before finally saying he wanted to talk to his wife but decided it would be a bad idea.

At the time the incident occurred, he claimed to be at Towers Bar in Fern Glen.

He told police that he had found out the couple would be at Great Wolf Lodge and said that, if he was going to do something, it would have been then, when they were face to face.

Charges were filed against Litwhiler on Oct. 23.

He was formerly officer-in-charge for East Union Township. Supervisors voted to terminate his employment at the Oct. 6, 2025 township meeting. No reason was provided.
