EMA: 31 structures damaged in Mahanoy tornado; deadline to report is Thursday

Federal disaster funding ‘unattainable’

MAHANOY CITY – More than two dozen homes reported damage in last week’s tornado in Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County Emergency Management officials said in a release Wednesday.

As of today, 27 residences and four businesses reported damage.

If your home or business received damage, you should report it to Mahanoy City Borough Hall or the Schuylkill County Office of Emergency Management (570-622-3739) by tomorrow, Thursday, June 6.

Most damaged structures are covered by provide insurance.

Based on the damage reports received, EMA says they have determined that qualifying for federal disaster funding will be unattainable.

Emergency Management staff and local officials have worked carefully to review damages and requirements for programs.

The Schuylkill County Community Organizations Active in Disaster-COAD is stepping up to fill the need to assist un-insured homeowners with recovery from this Tornado.

COAD is a collaborative partnership between community stakeholders-government, voluntary, private and non-profit organizations that assists in organizing community efforts to provide needed services to community members that arise as a result of a disaster that occurs in the County. “As in past localized disasters, such as the flooding in the summer of 2018, community groups come together to assist in the aftermath of the Tornado as “Neighbors helping Neighbors,” EMA said in a release.
