Eight transported after man strikes multiple cars, pedestrians while leaving Hazleton fireworks

HAZLETON HEIGHTS – Police are investigating after they say a man hit multiple cars and two people while leaving Hazleton’s fireworks event at City View Park.

This happened around 10pm Sunday at the entrance to City View Park off South Poplar Street, according to Hazleton Police.

Officers said Gerald Makarewicz, 76, was driving a red Honda CR-V when he struck a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

He then struck two pedestrians and turned north onto Poplar Street, hitting two more cars before police were able to stop the man.

Eight people were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Hazleton for treatment of injuries. All were minor except for one pedestrian, who police said suffered moderate injuries.

Police are still investigating and charges have not yet been filed.
