Duplex damaged by fire in Humboldt, no injuries reported
HUMBOLDT, Luzerne County – Firefighters from three counties were called to fight a fire in a double-block home in this Hazle Township village Monday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to a home at 245 Humboldt Street in the village around 6:00pm for a reported house fire.
Hazle Township Fire Assistant Chief Mike Volciak said firefighters were advised of black smoke coming from the home prior to arrival.
The first arriving engine, he said, found a working fire in the second floor and stretched a line to attack it.
“As they were doing that, they noticed that the stairs were burned away and they were unable to access the second floor,” Volciak said, noting firefighters had to access the fire via the porch roof and second floor windows.
The fire broke out in the occupied half of the structure, 245. No one was home at the time, Volciak said. The vacant side of the structure, 243, suffered smoke and water damage.
A second alarm was struck because of high temperatures, bringing firefighters from McAdoo, Lehigh-Lausanne, and more to the scene.
No one was injured, Volciak said.
Firefighters from Hazle Township, Harwood, Sheppton-Oneida, Valley Regional, West Hazleton, Hazleton’s Diamond Fire Co., among others responded to the scene.
A State Police fire marshal will be on scene Tuesday morning to investigate.
