Divine Mercy food sale, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Procession coming up

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - The statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is carried along West Washington Street in Shenandoah on July 21, 2024.

SHENANDOAH – This weekend is a key fundraiser for the Catholic Church in Shenandoah and the annual procession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is coming up later this month.

The Divine Mercy Parish Summer Food Sale will be held Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12 from 1pm to 7pm at the church and on Sunday, July 13 from noon to 6pm.

Of course, there’ll be plenty of homemade pierogies for sale along with other favorites — kielbasi hoagies, haluskie, wedding soup, and much more.

Cakes and baked items are needed for the food sale and volunteers are as well. Call the parish office if you can help.

The Procession of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is the following weekend, set for Sunday, July 20.

Mass is at 8am at St .Casimir’s Church and the procession through the northwest side of town follows.

This year marks 111 years of the tradition, dating back to 1914 as part of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish. The tradition carried on following the merger of the Catholic churches in the Shenandoah Valley.

Traditionally, families carry homemade “cintas,” or small shrines, some of which have passed from generation to generation, while others volunteer for the honor of carrying the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel or the canopy held over the statue.

Residents and parishioners alike make donations to the parish by pinning dollar bills to the statue as it passes through town.

This year, as in recent years, families will not bid for the honor of carrying the statue of Our Lady or her canopy. Instead, it will be shared by individuals and families who wish to participate, Divine Mercy said in a recent church bulletin.
