Dive teams continue search at abandoned stripping pit near Girardville

GIRARDVILLE – Dive teams from across eastern Pennsylvania are in the Girardville area, seeking a missing person believed to be in an abandoned water-filled strip mine.

Wednesday is day two of the search at the pit, known locally as the “A-Hole.” The pit and its nearby twin, the “B-Hole” are infamous in the area. Fire Chief Frank Zangari said this incident is the seventh there in his four-decade tenure.

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – A Fish and Boat Commission unit arrives on scene Wednesday.

He said two boats are in the water as of 1:30pm and sonar is being used as part of the search.

Dive teams from Lackawanna County as well as Lancaster and Lebanon counties are on scene, along with the Fish and Boat Commission and the State Police Marine Unit.

Main Street from 4th to Rappahannock remains closed at this hour.
