Disaster emergency declared in Girardville, Mt. Carmel; Parks closed in area towns
GIRARDVILLE – Disaster emergencies have been declared in Girardville and Mount Carmel, and parks are now closed in those municipalities plus Frackville, all as coronavirus precautions.
Girardville Mayor Michael Zangari told the Sentinel parks are closed until further notice in his borough.
His municipality declared a disaster emergency today, which will allow emergency management officials to take “all appropriate action needed to alleviate the effects” of the coronavirus pandemic.
The emergency declaration allows the borough to take any action required to meet the situation “without regard to those time-consuming procedures and formalities normally prescribed by law, mandatory constitutional requirements excepted.”
Mount Carmel in Northumberland County declared a disaster emergency yesterday, noting that the police department will remain manned though will handle non-emergency calls by phone or electronic device “as seen fit.” All other emergencies will be handled promptly.
The borough has also banned crowd gatherings of more than 10 people in public, including streets, facilities, and the Town Park, which is to be used for through traffic only.
Frackville Police announced on Facebook today that parks in that borough are closed until further notice.
As of noon today, no cases were reported in Schuylkill, Northumberland, Columbia, Carbon, or Dauphin Counties.
Two cases were reported in Luzerne, five in Berks, one in Lebanon, and two in Lehigh.
