DEP: Work began to fill in Park Place mine subsidence; at least 50 feet deep
PARK PLACE – Work began Tuesday to fill in a mine subsidence at a Mahanoy Township home that swallowed an in-ground pool whole earlier this week.
The cave-in happened at 267 Park Place Road in that village, feet east of where another sinkhole threatened the home itself in 2016. The most recent cave-in wholly destroyed the pool and a shed is teetering on the edge of the pit.
A Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) spokesperson shared more information on the response Wednesday.
They said the subsidence is at least 50 feet deep and 100 feet around, though the exact depth is undetermined due to safety concerns.
Remnants of the pool fence could still be seen in the hole.
DEP said that, based on mine maps, this subsidence is mine related.
“Depth to mining is approximately 20 feet,” DEP said. “The subsidence poses a serious and immediate threat to the structures (shed and attached garage) and residents.”
DEP began to fill the subsidence Tuesday with concrete mix material purchased by DEP.
The subsidence happened just after midnight early Monday morning and residents said it sounded like “a bad thunderstorm.”
No injuries were reported.
