Demolition begins on Bower Street neighborhood
KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Demolition is seen underway on row homes on North Bower Street in Shenandoah on Sept. 9, 2025.
SHENANDOAH – A portion of Shenandoah’s east end, including long abandoned homes and the burned United Wiping Cloth factory are coming down as part of a planned revitalization of the neighborhood.
The Schuylkill County Redevelopment Authority acquired much of the 100 block of North Bower, North Lehigh, and East Lloyd Street to make way for a senior housing project.
Borough Manager Mike Cadau told the Sentinel that squatters were found in some of the homes and removed before the homes were flattened by a contractor throughout the day Tuesday.
Cadau said the United Wiping Cloth demolition will begin in the near future as well.
The project has been in the works for several years now and has received thousands in state funding.
